In this year's edition of the SHARPER European Researcher's Night we highlighted the growing threat of mosquitoes as vectors of diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, malaria, and West Nile virus. Young children got to learn about the mosquito life cycle, and got an up close encounter with live mosquitoes. Children walked away with mosquito balloons. We emphasized the importance of getting rid of stagnant water to prevent mosquito breeding at home and explained how the insect-endosymbiont bacteria Wolbachia is used globally as a mosquito control strategy.
